Operational Presence and Intended Locations
We are honest and precise about our geographic footprint. We distinguish clearly between where we have worked, where we are actively growing into, and where we hold a longer-term aspiration — because credibility rests on that distinction, and because partners are entitled to know exactly what an organization can demonstrate today.
A three-tier presence
Our presence is best understood in three tiers, shown on the maps that follow:

The map below places NPI within Nigeria: our base and current work in Borno State in the North-East, the state of phased expansion, and the wider North-East region of longer-term aspiration.
Borno State — current and planned areas
Within Borno State, our current presence is anchored in Bama Local Government Area, with our organizational base in Maiduguri (Maiduguri Metropolitan Council). The map below shows this current presence together with the candidate Local Government Areas into which we plan to expand over the plan period. The planned Local Government Areas are realistic candidates — chosen for high need and viable access — and are illustrative: actual expansion will follow assessed need, security and access, and secured funding.
How we decide where to work
Our expansion is deliberate, not opportunistic. Decisions on where to work are guided by:
- Severity of need — we prioritise areas where children face the greatest protection, education, nutrition and WASH needs.
- Access and security — we work where humanitarian access is viable and where we can operate safely and maintain community acceptance.
- Community acceptance and relationships — we build from areas where we have relationships and trust, extending outward.
- Coordination and complementarity — we work where we add value alongside others, guided by the coordination system, avoiding duplication.
- Funding — we enter and sustain locations for which funding is secured, matching our reach to our resources.
Why we show our footprint this way
Many organizations claim wide geographic reach. We prefer to state plainly what we have done, what we are actively building towards, and what remains an aspiration — and to keep the three clearly separate. This is a matter of integrity, and it is how a partner earns trust: our current evidenced presence is modest and real; our expansion is planned and credible; our aspiration is honestly labelled as such. We grow by matching our reach to our proven capacity, never by over-claiming.
